Architect Max Gunawan launched a 2013 Kickstarter campaign with no engineering background. A rechargeable battery, LED modules, and a precision wood enclosure — all designed as one integrated system. Example 3 — consumer product

PopSockets — 60 rounds of prototyping turned a kitchen-table hack into 100 million units sold

David Barnett, a philosophy professor, was tired of his earbuds tangling in his pocket. He glued two clothing buttons to the back of his phone as a fix. Friends joked about how ridiculous it looked, so he set out to build something that could collapse flat.

He taught himself 3D CAD software and sent his designs to a prototyper in China. It took 60 rounds of prototypes over 15 months before the accordion mechanism reliably expanded and collapsed. Once the design was locked, he moved to injection molding for the final tooling — prototyping materials couldn’t be used for production parts.

He launched on Kickstarter in 2012, then started selling from his garage in 2014. PopSockets has since sold more than 100 million units and crossed $200 million in annual revenue.

No. A sketch, photo, or written description is enough to get started. We will ask the right questions to map out your product accurately. If CAD files are needed, our engineers create them as part of the prototyping process.

A 3D print is a single-method output. Our prototypes are built using whichever combination of methods your product actually requires — 3D printing, CNC machining, injection molding, silicone casting, electronics assembly, or manual fabrication. The goal is a functional, DFM-reviewed product, not just a visual model.

Yes. We handle PCB design, firmware, and enclosure as an integrated build. Electronics are not treated as a separate track — they are designed alongside the enclosure from day one.

Most prototypes are completed in 25 to 35 days from brief confirmation to physical delivery. Electronics-integrated products typically take 6 to 10 weeks. Your quote includes a specific timeline.

Yes. Once your prototype is approved, we move directly to small batch manufacturing starting at 20 units. For injection-molded products, we build aluminum molds for small batch runs or steel molds for production-scale volumes. The same team handles the full journey.
