Example 2 — CNC wood wall art / Etsy and Amazon

Enjoy The Wood — a wooden world map built for one office became a $500,000 Kickstarter

Igor Poroshyn wanted a wooden world map for his office to pin flags of countries where he had customers. He could not find anything he liked, so he built one himself using CNC-cut layered wood panels assembled to create a three-dimensional map of the world.

He put it up for sale on Etsy. Customers started ordering. In 2016 he launched a Kickstarter campaign — originally aiming for $15,000. The campaign raised over $100,000. The 2019 campaign for the next-generation 3D wooden world map raised $500,000. The 2021 campaign broke $800,000 in 30 days with 3,474 backers.

The product started as one CNC-cut wood panel made for a personal office wall. The prototype was the product. The first version sold on Etsy was the test. Every campaign after that was funded by the validation of the one before.

What this took: CNC-cut layered wood panels in multiple species, precision depth offsets for the 3D relief effect, staining and finishing, and a wall-mounting system that ships flat and assembles in minutes.

Material: Layered CNC wood panels  |  Platform: Etsy and Kickstarter  |  Raised: $800,000+ on a single campaign

Example 3 — furniture and audio products

Frailey Woodworks — vinyl record consoles and sit/stand desks at $30,000 per month

James Frailey, a retired engineer, started Frailey Woodworks around a Thanksgiving table in 2019 with his family. The business combines engineering precision, architectural knowledge, and fine craftsmanship to produce mid-century modern furniture including vinyl record consoles, audio cabinets, and sit/stand desks.

The vinyl record console became their flagship. It sits at the intersection of two things people care deeply about — music and the objects that hold it. The joinery is precise, the material is solid hardwood, and the dimensions are engineered for the weight and vibration of real audio equipment.

Frailey Woodworks now generates $30,000 per month in revenue with a team of six. It started with a prototype built over a holiday weekend and a listing on their website to see if anyone would pay for it.

What this took: Solid hardwood milling, precision dado and mortise-and-tenon joinery, flush-fit drawer engineering, and a surface finish that holds up under real audio use.

Material: Solid hardwood  |  Products: Vinyl consoles and sit/stand desks  |  Revenue: $30,000/month

What wood products and furniture we build

Wood is one of the most versatile and marketable materials for consumer products. It reads as premium without requiring premium pricing. It photographs beautifully. It sells well on Amazon, Etsy, and in home goods retail. And when designed correctly, it ships flat, assembles in minutes, and has almost no damage rate.

We prototype and produce wood products across three categories: standalone wood products and accessories, furniture and flatpack designs, and wood products with embedded electronics. All three are designed DFM-first — meaning the prototype is built with production in mind from day one, not retrofitted later.

Our own product — wood and electronics hybrid

AutoBowl 2.0 — a hands-free Tibetan singing bowl built on an ash hardwood base

The AutoBowl 2.0 is a product we designed and built ourselves under our OHMDAILY brand. It is a hands-free self-striking Tibetan singing bowl: a hand-hammered brass bowl from Nepal mounted on a precision-milled ash hardwood base with three analog wooden dials controlling timing and mode.

The base houses the electronics, motor system, and analog dial mechanism. The wood and the electronics were designed together from the start — the dial positions, the motor mounting, the bowl cradle geometry, and the steel fittings are all integrated into the wood structure. The finish is natural ash, hand-oiled to bring out the grain.

This is exactly the type of wood and electronics hybrid product we build for clients. It combines precision CNC machining, hand finishing, electronics integration, and production-grade mechanical design into one cohesive product.

What this took: Ash hardwood CNC base, three analog wooden dials, steel fittings, motor mechanism, electronics cavity routing, and hand oil finish.

Material: Ash hardwood  |  Electronics: Motor, timing circuit, analog dials  |  Brand: OHMDAILY

Example 2 — decorative wall art and sculpture

Large-format CNC wood sculpture — a manta ray built from layered strips

This large-format wall sculpture was CNC-cut from wood panels and assembled into a dimensional manta ray form with flowing layered strips and a metal tail extension. Each strip is individually cut, finished, and mounted at a precise offset to create depth and movement.

Decorative wood products like this are some of the strongest performers on Etsy and in home goods retail. The combination of natural wood grain, dimensional form, and clear subject matter — animals, nature, geometric patterns — creates products that photograph well, ship as flatpack panels, and assemble cleanly at the customer end.

What this took: CNC cutting of layered wood strips, individual piece finishing, precision assembly and mounting hardware, and metal tail fabrication.

Material: Natural wood panels and steel  |  Process: CNC cutting and layered assembly

Example 3 — audio and electronics enclosures

Solid walnut speaker cabinet with precision dovetail joinery and hand finish

This speaker cabinet is built from solid walnut with hand-cut joinery and a lacquer finish that brings out the full depth of the grain. Speaker enclosures are one of the most demanding wood products to build — the internal volume must be precise, the joints must be airtight, the driver cutout must be dimensionally accurate, and the finish must be museum quality.

We build audio enclosures for custom speaker brands, audiophile manufacturers, and product designers who want wood enclosures that justify their asking price. The same process applies to any electronics enclosure where the wood is structural, not decorative.

What this took: Solid walnut machining, precision driver cutout, airtight dovetail joinery, internal bracing, and multi-stage lacquer finish.

Material: Solid walnut  |  Process: CNC and hand joinery  |  Finish: Multi-stage lacquer

Transparent pricing — get your quote in 48 hours

Starting from

$1,000

simple single-piece wood prototype

Our base rate is $25 per hour plus material costs. A simple single-component wood product starts at $1,000. Here is what moves the price:

  • Wood species — MDF and plywood cost less; solid hardwood like walnut and teak cost more
  • Complexity — a simple shelf costs less than a multi-component assembly with precision joinery
  • Finish quality — raw sanded wood costs less than hand-stained, lacquered, or oiled finishes
  • Electronics integration — precision cutouts for buttons, ports, or LED windows require additional machining time
  • Quantity — per-unit cost drops significantly from prototype to a 20 to 100 unit small batch run

Every quote is itemized. Material, machining, finishing, and hardware costs listed separately.

What clients say

“I needed a wooden enclosure for a Bluetooth speaker with precise driver cutouts and internal bracing. PrototyperLab machined the walnut enclosure to within 0.3mm, hand-finished it to a premium feel, and delivered a prototype that looked better than the reference product I showed them.”

Marcus D.
Product designer, audio accessories

“We needed 50 units of a flatpack wood shelf for our Amazon launch. PrototyperLab designed the joinery, optimized the panel dimensions for FBA requirements, and delivered 50 units in four weeks. The damage rate in FBA was zero. We have since ordered 300 units for our second restocking run.”

Frequently asked questions

We work with hardwoods including ash, walnut, oak, maple, cherry, and teak, as well as engineered woods like MDF, plywood, and bamboo composites. We also work with reclaimed wood for sustainable or rustic product stories. Material selection depends on your aesthetic goals, structural requirements, and target price point.

Yes, and this is a specialty of ours. The AutoBowl 2.0 is a product we built ourselves that combines a CNC-machined ash hardwood base with an internal motor mechanism, timing electronics, and three analog wooden dials. We design wooden enclosures with integrated electronics including routing for wiring, precision cutouts for buttons and ports, and internal PCB mounting structures. The wood and the electronics are designed together from the start.

Yes. If your product needs to ship flat and be assembled by the end user, we design for flatpack from the beginning. This includes joint design, tolerance management, and assembly instruction development. Flatpack design reduces shipping costs significantly, which matters a lot for Amazon FBA sellers where dimensional weight pricing directly affects your margin.

Our standard finishing process includes sanding through multiple grits, staining or painting to your color spec, and sealing with lacquer, oil, or wax. For products that need a premium feel, we offer hand-rubbed oil finishes and custom stain matching.

Simple single-component wooden products typically take 2 to 3 weeks. Furniture pieces with multiple components and finishing take 4 to 6 weeks. Products with embedded electronics take longer because the electronics and enclosure design phases run in parallel. Your quote includes a specific timeline.

Yes. We produce large-format CNC wood wall art, dimensional sculptures, layered panel installations, and architectural wood feature walls. These products sell well on Etsy, in interior design markets, and in hospitality and commercial fit-out projects. The manta ray wall sculpture in our gallery is an example of a product built entirely in our facility.
